  13. I am going to be a little careful as much of what I have been told was udner non-disclosure.  Fortunately not all.

  15. Note that DEC has a LOT of information available undernon-disclosure in the US
  16. since some of this stuff is getting close to announcement.

  18.                 I am looking out for equipment that will replace the HSCs
  19.         or co-exist with them on the CI Bus, that is, connected to the Star
  20.         coupler directly be faster in terms of I/O requests /sec and have
  21.         some measure of redundancy maybe a RAID solution.

  23. Digital has publicly mentioned that they are working on RAID solutions.  
  24. THe only public mentions I recall were on software based solutions ala
  25. Volume Shadows phase II but for higher levels of raid, ultimately all the way
  26. up.

  28.                 Have these Companies made agreements with DEC to interface
  29.         on to the CI bus, or would we be likely to see some legal issues
  30.         comming to the surface as they have in the past ?
  31. Check careful (get in writing) wether the firmware is based on DECs new 
  32. CI licensing program or will be converted to it.  There were some problems
  33. with early products not being fully compliant and some of us have fought 
  34. for a long time to get DEC to license out its valuable technologies.  
  35. There are going to be some licensed products.  If a vendor can't cover license 
  36. fees and wont; guarentee compatibility or replacement with a compatible 
  37. solution then something is wrong.

  39. Paralell disk arrays appear at the Files 11 level as one large disk, today.  
  40. That puts some obviouslimits on its potential size.  Of course you can 
  41. split those into pieces at the vax end and a full hardware soltuion 
  42. like failsafe can lie about its configuration anyway it wants but there 
  43. are some real advantages to keeping the physical to logical disk mapping 
  44. relatively straightforwards.

  46.                 What happens in the Backup area?  If chunks are distributed
  47.         across multiple spindles is backup in the traditional sense meaningful?

  49. A storage solutions expand the notionof backup becomes much harder.  
  50. At first blush you go to logical backups of the disks if you find the 
  51. reliability insufficient or for other purposes.  Then youg et into
  52. heirarchical datastores and have to add a whole new level of thinking.

  54. Either it is a special case of date replication or it is nextus of tools
  55. including a file system level journal and set of data dumps.
