- THANKS to everyone who send email! I appreciate your help and
- responsiveness. I was suprized at how many hardcore C-64 users are
- still floating around!
-
- Anyway, just for everyone's fun and enlightenment, it turns out it was
- a bad 6526 CIA#2. The VIC II uses bits 1 and 2 of Port A on the chip to
- do its bank selecting for video RAM (dividing the 64K addresses into 4 x
- 16K banks). A blown CIA#2 can give you a garbled display. The screen
- will look normal, but all the characters will have a garbaged look,
- just asif you've switched out the Character ROM without first copying the
- characters to RAM underneath (if you've done that type of programming,
- you know what I'm talking about).
-
- I think I blew my CIA chip when I was plugging or unplugging my RS-232
- adapter on the User port. Anyway, if you have this problem on power up,
- try replacing CIA#2 or the PLA (82S100). On or the other is the most
- likely culprit.
-
- Thanks again, for all the help.

- BTW, on another note, it seems EVERYONE recommends Maverick as the
- C-64 backup program of choice. Thanks for all the recommendations!
