- On my 3b2/400 I've found I must always boot dbmon and then run "dgn
- sbd" (or any other diagnostic, but this one's reasonably fast, and
- gives one the warm fuzzies too!) in order to turn off the diagnostic
- LED.
-
- On the other hand, I've managed to maintain "correct" operation of the
- system recently, and haven't had occasion where I've been forced to
- reset the system and thus endure the red light! One thing that has
- helped has been removal of the "initdefault" line from /etc/inittab,
- and the other has been taping a card to my console that describes the
- /etc/uadmin arguments.

- It's been some time, but I can attest that indeed the diagnostic light
- is turned on by system panics.
-
- On my system, in every case where it has come on *after* having been
- off while the system is running, it has *always* indicated serious
- system failure. Fortunately I've only seen it on a very few times.
-
- It might have made more sense if the system powered up with it in the
- off state, though that would have meant the diagnostics would have to
- be functional enough to turn it on again in order to indicate failures.
- Powering up with the light in the on state is the only way to ensure
- that it will always be lit when there is any problem that prevents
- successful system startup (short of a catastrophic power supply
- failure, of course).
