- Due to the time lag of getting replies, I'm following up my own message,
- to update what I've figured out about installing nn on hermes, hopefully
- it will help others with problems.
-
- First problem I found a solution to had to do with the USR variable.
- Hermes was quite happy with g:. as I used the drive itself as a usr
- directory. Also, I had moved NEWS to another drive, as 16meg wasn't enough
- to run a news system when I went out of town for any length of time.
-
- Second, you have to change the ACTIVE variable as nn trashes hermes'
- active file when buildact runs. Fortunately, nn uses the usr/lib path
- to find active, while hermes uses the ACTIVE variable, so defining
- that to something like active.hrm allows rnews to read a file it can
- understand, and nn can do what it likes with lib/news/active.
-
- Third, after every poll of your're feed, you must run buildact after
- rmail, then nnadmin -EYW to update nn's database.
-
- Fourth, If you call nn and get " no news is good news", try nn -g.
- Start with alt. when it prompts for a group name. Enter the first group,
- and chck the top status line. If it says UNSUB, hit 'U' to resubscribe.
- You will have to do this with every group you read. You can advane though
- unsubscribed groups with 'A', and subscribe to each one. Also, if you've
- been using hermes, and don't have all the CURRENT.USR variables set, you
- should use herme's login program to log into nn, as this will set the
- currentuser variable so nn knows who you are.
-
- These hints should get you to where you can read news with nn, but
- here's where I need help. I can't figure out how to set aux.ttp to allow
- me to post. The readme mentions aux.mup/doaux.ttp. but the release has
- only aux.tt, and no clue as to what should be in the .mup file. In my init
- file, I've set the mailer to mmail, martin's mailer from hermes. I set
- inews to mrecmail, but in hermes. mmail handlers boith news and mail
- posting. If I try to followup or reply, nn returns, announcing that
- nothing was done.
-
- Can someone using nn explain how to set up aux and init to post
- or mail using hermes? Also, does nn handle mail reading, or is that only
- possible with elm or mail? Thirdly, is there anywhere to put mailing
- addresses for moderated groups, and anyway to tell nn which groups are
- moderated?
