- Well, I'm contemplating squeezing some more hardware into the guts of
- my ST and I wondered if anyone could give me some advice. The two
- upgrades I'm currently considering are...
-
- A cheap accelerator board (probably 16 MHz 68000) which seem quite cheap,
-
- The PD Overscan mod, which seems incredibly cheap!
-
- The things I'm concerned with are mainly (1) performance and (2) compatibility
- with the software I'm using. Firstly, what kind of speed increase do you get
- from the accelerator? Will it significantly speed up window drawing, number
- crunching and the like? What performance do people get from things like
- packed executables/ archives being uncompressed, ray tracing programs, screen
- redraws and the like? Is it worth coughing up more cash for a 25Mhz or even
- faster?
-
- Regarding Overscan, does it slow down the computer significantly when it's
- running? If so, how much? There's also a hardware kit over here in the UK
- called the "Autoswitch Overscan" which (I think) fits into the monitor
- (Hi res) and costs 50 UK pounds- as I almost exclusively use Hi-res this
- would be equally functional for me, so does anyone have experience of this?
- Is it better/worse than the PD overscan hardware mod?
-
- Compatibility- I play a few games in colour, but presumably both these mods
- can be deactivated so that shouldn't be a problem (should it?) but in hi res
- I'm using (or planning on buying) Neodesk 3, Steinberg Cubase, Spectre GCR,
- and numerous ray-tracers, graphics programs, and STOS. Anyone have any
- experience of how these programs work with 16MHz / Overscan modes?
-
- Anyway, thanks for reading all this, If I get much feedback I'll post a
- summary. Cheers...
