- This question prompts me to go ahead and tell everyone something I discovered
- a few months ago. There's an electronics company (I'll quote specifics
- later if there's interest) which has a supply of new trac balls for the old
- Atari 5200 game machine for like $12.95. The things a bit of a monster, but
- has a really nice trac ball mech, and it turns out that (after I hacked
- for a day or so) that by simply removing four of the five chips in the
- socketted circuitboard, and plugging a connector in place of one of the
- chips, you have a perfectly working trac ball to work on the //e mouse
- card! (Should work with the //c too.) (Ok, I had to replace ONE resistor
- too... turned out the five volt supply was a bit too low for one of the
- opto-sensors to operate within tolerances and so it tracked funny in one
- direction.. Chances are that most of 'em won't even need that. Thus this
- becomes a NO SOLDER modification (other than actually building the cable
- iself, but conceivably someone could use a crimp connect DB-9 and get away
- with no soldering... =)

- So, if anyone's really interested, I'll dig up the company's name and
- number, and give exact details for the modification. The thing works
- great, although it'd be nice to be able to trim the case down some.
- (Also, there are two numeric keypads with the little rubber keys on 'em.
- Those could easily be wired to the //e numeric keypad connector and give
- you a functional (if somewhat small) numeric keypad!)
