- You'll want to get an SSC (Super Serial Card) first and put it in slot
- 2. Next, you'll want to get ProTERM 3.0; as far as I know, it's the
- only comm program that'll talk to high-speed modems. (Kermit doesn't
- support hardware handshaking. Haven't thought to see if TIC works.)
-
- Modem choices...here are the high-speed modems directly supported by
- ProTERM:
-
- * Hayes Smartmodem V9600 (may also work with their new Optima series;
- avoid their "V-series" modems as they are not v.32-compatible)
- * Okidata Okitel 9600 (probably a v.32, but who knows for sure?)
- * USRobotics Courier HST/HST Dual Standard (available in 9600/v.32,
- 14.4K/v.32bis, and 16.8K/v.32bis; if you get one of these, get the
- "Dual Standard" model as the HST-only modems are not v.32/v.32bis-
- compatible...or there's also the Courier v.32bis, which is probably
- the best deal you'd get from USRobotics)
-
- There's also a "generic high-speed modem" driver, and you could
- probably hack that driver (or one of the drivers listed above) to work
- with any v.32 or v.32bis modem. I have a SupraFAXmodem v.32bis that I
- originally bought for my (temporarily dead) IBM clone...it works, but
- InSync is having a hell of a time figuring out what a driver needs to
- do to talk to one of these modems. (There's a firmware bug in the
- modem...doesn't seem to cause problems for my clone, but it can give
- Apple II comm programs fits. I need to get new ROMs from Supra to see
- if they work any better.)
-
- In any case, get v.32bis if you can...it's the fastest standard
- available (14.4K) at this time. USRobotics HST (16.8K) and Telebit
- PEP (23K? 19.2K at least) may be faster, but they're non-standard
- systems. You'll have an especially hard time finding Telebits since
- they're used mainly to move UUCP traffic and never caught on in the
- BBS world. HST is a little more common, but HST-only sites are rare
- anymore...and USRobotics modems (any model, not just the high-speed
- ones) cost big $$$.
