- I just want to set the record straight before anyone else sends me flames.
-
- As many of you know, I write the Shareware Solutions column in inCider/A+
- Magazine. At the insistence of my editor, I have been supplying Shareware
- Solutions Companion Disks to inCider readers. To help me defray my costs,
- the price of those disks have been $5 for a single 3.5" disk (or $5 for 4
- sides of 5.25" disks) and $10 for the multidisk sets that have 3 3.5" disks.
- I have been accused, in email, of being a maggot, preying on poor
- defenseless II owners (my words). So, to set the record straight.
-
- In every case, before putting these disks together, I have contacted the
- various shareware authors and asked them for permission to include their
- software on the Companion Disks. In every case, I have told the shareware
- authors exactly what I am up to, and exactly how much money I am charging
- for these disks. In many cases, the shareware authors have sent me their
- latest versions to include on these disks.
-
- I also include a long article, specially written for each disk, that
- describes all the software, how to run it, and I always include a long blurb
- about the importance of paying shareware fees. At KansasFest, some shareware
- authors thanked me. Additionally, some authors handed me disks, asking me to
- include their work on my Companion Disks.
-
- I am doing the Companion Disks with the permission of each and every
- shareware author whose work appears on my disks.
-
- I have received nasty letters from some people in email. The protect the
- guilty, I will not post their names. But, I will not sit here and listen to
- such blatent absurdities. Some people on the net seem to thrive on flames,
- and constantly need a whipping boy. Well, guys, it ain't gonna be me.
-
- In fact, I have been told by numerous shareware authors that I am the only
- person who has ever contacted them to ask for permission. And, I know for a
- fact that I am the only person to send the FTA hundreds of dollars. Just
- last week, when I saw Olivier Goguel, I handed him another $40.
-
- So...in short...if you gotta flame someone, flame someone who deserves it.
