- Okay, so are you at liberty to discuss what they're
- planning for the future? And, no, to be fair, I have never
- seen a Vivid board or for that matter any other DMI video
- board.
-
- I think it's rather pointless to compare something
- like a 4D/480VGX to an Amiga with a Vivid board. First
- of all, the 480 is much, much faster than any Amiga. Second,
- if DMI think that they can squeeze 160 MFLOPS out of 4 40
- MFLOPS processors, all the time, they'd best hang up their
- business, find a willing research sponsor (of which there are
- tons), and make huge, earthshaking discoveries in multiprocessing.
- Third, unless they've broken some laws of physics and economics,
- there is no way they can reproduce the effects that a VGX system
- can render. Face it: DMI and SGI are aiming at different
- markets, and there are very many good reasons to shell out
- $180K for an SGI. If I had that kind of money, I'd get a
- Crimson Reality Engine in an instant and save $60K (beat
- that DMI :-).
-
- If you're aiming at the Indigoes, that's another
- argument (which the Amiga loses to in comparison very
- easily as well). Sorry to burst your bubbles, people,
- Amigas are NOT high-end graphics machines and never will
- be, although I for one will be very happy if I could only
- get the mythical AA chipset for my 3000.
-
- Follow-ups by email or in advocacy, please.

- PS: to prove my point, people are more than welcome to
- drop by and I can give them a demo of an SGI Crimson/Elan
- running TDI Explore 3.0.
