I think the problem that many of us has with the PIXAR deal is that many of us already have programs that we enjoy.  I own Imagine 2.0, and even though it isn't RenderMan, it was a heck of a lot cheaper!  I couldn't afford another rendering program.  Not to mention the time to learn it.  I think that the programs out are great.  Maybe they don't have the name that Renderman does, but for the price they are great.
