Whoa there! ... You've got my full, undivided attention now -- as a CNet owner myself. I'm interested in your comments about CNet being a "rip off", but remain, at best, unconvinced.
Obviously you posted that message into an international network like UseNet to prove a point (or to do some damage.) If you want to get your point across, IMHO, you need to provide ample-ample >proof<.
Because an idea is used in another BBS program does not necessarily mean that the same idea can never be used again. IE: Who was the first person to write a Voting Booth for a BBS system? Does that person have copyright on Voting code forever and ever and >must< be credited in all BBS systems that use voting booths? (And, to the best of my knowledge, all current BBS systems >DO< use voting booths.)
Because a user suggests mods for Ken to write into CNet does not mean he's ripping this mods off of anyone. He's simply taking a suggestion and coding it. He's should be allowed to take credit for the coding since he did 95% of the work (it's easy to dream up ideas, it's a little trickier to code 'em.)
I've also heard the bit about another person writing the "noise" routines for CNet. If this is indeed true, I have little doubt that Ken must have some type of an agreement with that person for him/her to not get a mention as being part of Perspective Software.
Also - the fact that the "C" icon is approximately the same size/shape as another popular package does not constitute proof either.
I'm very interested in what you have brought up - my BBS is important to me. Beyond the initial investment of $120+ for CNet2.0, I also pump hundreds of dollars per month into this "hobby" and I, of course, would like to know the full story of the software that I'm depending on daily. I'm not trying to flame you -- I just want to be absolutely certain that what you are saying is indeed true, even if I plan to do nothing in reaction to that news.
If you could please post/email whatever proof you have (ie: original author statements, specific lines of code, etc), I would greatly appreciate it. I personally feel that CNET has to be >the< greatest investment I have ever made in my Amiga.
Thanks much!
