- : Hmm. Maybe *here* is the problem. In order to function as intended,
- : c.s.r needs to be perceived as a prestigious place to post. Software
- : authors need to be willing to go to some extra effort in order to have
- : their stuff appear in c.s.r rather than c.s.m or c.s.u.
-
- I think I'm about to blow my cover as a lazy bum. :-)
-
- I haven't seen anyone else mention the "extra effort" angle -- I will
- probably never submit vile to c.s.r (and it may well be a poorer package
- because of it) because of the extra effort involved. I've made it as
- portable as _I_ need, I've incorporated a _lot_ of bugs/fixes/suggestions
- from users who picked it up from the initial posting in alt.sources and who
- have ftp'ed it after my casual announcements, and I've done all this
- _at_my_own_speed_, and at my own discretion.
-
- Remember that many software authors have full-time jobs doing software
- where the constraints on quality and deadlines etc. are fairly stringent.
- Part of the fun of writing something and giving it away is that you don't
- _have_ to follow all the rules -- only the ones _you_ think are good. Of
- course, if you break too many rules, no one uses your code.
-
- Perhaps c.s.r has simply stepped over a line of diminishing returns wrt how
- much effort people are willing to put in in order to please the network
- masses.

- p.s. very casual announcement:
- you can get it from ftp.cayman.com:/pub/vile/vile3.25shar.Z
