  13. This message is to announce the release of Pidentd version 2.0. 
  14.  
  15. Machines/OS supported: Sun's SunOS 4, HP's HP-UX 7 & 8, DEC's Ultrix 4,
  16. Sequent's Dynix 2 & 3, SysV Release 4, MIPS' RISC/OS 4, SGI IRIX 4 and
  17. possible others... (It once ran on a Convex too)

  19. What is Pidentd? It is a daemon that implements the IDENT / TAP / RFC931
  20. protocol for various Unix machines. It can be used to identify TCP/IP
  21. connection owners (so that information can be logged and not just the
  22. IP number the connection was originating from). For more information
  23. see the "pub/ident/doc" directory at the anonymous FTP archives at
  24. the machine "ftp.lysator.liu.se" ("ftp.uu.net" mirrors the "pub/ident"
  25. (and subdirectories) into "pub/networking/ident", but is probably not
  26. 100% up to date with the latest files. For information on how to get these
  27. files via Email, see the end of this message.

  29. New features (versus the old 1.8.1) include:
  30.  
  31.   * More machines/OS supported.
  32.  
  33.   * Multiple operation modes (start by Inetd (either one/connection, or
  34.     one/at-first-connection) or run as standalone background daemon).
  35.  
  36.   * Better configurability (via command line options):
  37.  
  38.       -m ............ Enables MultiQuery mode (as per IDENT)
  39.  
  40.     -N ............ Enables the HIDDEN-USER option.
  41.  
  42.     -c<charset> ... Adds the optional character set (as per IDENT)
  43.  
  44.     -e ............ Never give away any errors, always say UNKNOWN-ERROR
  45.  
  46.     -o ............ Never give away opsys type, always say OTHER
  47.  
  48.         -n ............ Don't return user names, return user numbers instead
  49.             (will automatically enable "-o").

  53.   * Better logging (via the syslog daemon), enabled via the option "-l".

  57. The daemon is available via anonymous FTP from the machine "ftp.lysator.liu.se"
  58. in the directory "pub/ident/servers" as the file "pidentd-2.0.tar.Z".

  61. subject ignored and with a body looking like:

  70. Now the work starts on Pidentd-2.1... :-) It will probably contain
  71. support for 4.3BSD and NeXTStep, will have a config file (in /etc),
  72. and include some kind of encryption of the identifiers returned.

  77. Also note that the latest version of this daemon is always available
  78. for anonymous FTP from the machine "ftp.lysator.liu.se" in the
  79. directory "pub/ident/servers". It is also possible to access the
  80. anonymous FTP archives via email. Send an email to "ftpserv@lysator.liu.se"
  81. any subject (it is ignored) and with a body of:

  88. This will send you a small page of information on how to retrieve files
  89. and directory listings, and also a directory listing of the files in the
  90. "pub/ident/servers" directory.
