- This message is to announce the release of Pidentd version 2.0.
-
- Machines/OS supported: Sun's SunOS 4, HP's HP-UX 7 & 8, DEC's Ultrix 4,
- Sequent's Dynix 2 & 3, SysV Release 4, MIPS' RISC/OS 4, SGI IRIX 4 and
- possible others... (It once ran on a Convex too)
-
- What is Pidentd? It is a daemon that implements the IDENT / TAP / RFC931
- protocol for various Unix machines. It can be used to identify TCP/IP
- connection owners (so that information can be logged and not just the
- IP number the connection was originating from). For more information
- see the "pub/ident/doc" directory at the anonymous FTP archives at
- the machine "ftp.lysator.liu.se" ("ftp.uu.net" mirrors the "pub/ident"
- (and subdirectories) into "pub/networking/ident", but is probably not
- 100% up to date with the latest files. For information on how to get these
- files via Email, see the end of this message.
-
- New features (versus the old 1.8.1) include:
-
- * More machines/OS supported.
-
- * Multiple operation modes (start by Inetd (either one/connection, or
- one/at-first-connection) or run as standalone background daemon).
-
- * Better configurability (via command line options):
-
- -m ............ Enables MultiQuery mode (as per IDENT)
-
- -N ............ Enables the HIDDEN-USER option.
-
- -c<charset> ... Adds the optional character set (as per IDENT)
-
- -e ............ Never give away any errors, always say UNKNOWN-ERROR
-
- -o ............ Never give away opsys type, always say OTHER
-
- -n ............ Don't return user names, return user numbers instead
- (will automatically enable "-o").
-
- (For a complete list of options, se the manual page or the source)
-
- * Better logging (via the syslog daemon), enabled via the option "-l".
-
- * A lot of bugs fixed...
-
- The daemon is available via anonymous FTP from the machine "ftp.lysator.liu.se"
- in the directory "pub/ident/servers" as the file "pidentd-2.0.tar.Z".
-
- It can also be received by sending an email to "ftpserv@lysator.liu.se",
- subject ignored and with a body looking like:
-
- CD pub/ident/servers
- UUSEND pidentd-2.0.tar.Z
- QUIT
-
- Many thanks goes to the betatesters who have accepted my many test versions
- without too much complaining! Thanks a lot!
-
- Now the work starts on Pidentd-2.1... :-) It will probably contain
- support for 4.3BSD and NeXTStep, will have a config file (in /etc),
- and include some kind of encryption of the identifiers returned.
-
- If you are interrested to become a beta-tester, please let me know and
- I'll add you to the small mailing list!
-
- Also note that the latest version of this daemon is always available
- for anonymous FTP from the machine "ftp.lysator.liu.se" in the
- directory "pub/ident/servers". It is also possible to access the
- anonymous FTP archives via email. Send an email to "ftpserv@lysator.liu.se"
- any subject (it is ignored) and with a body of:
-
- HELP
- CD pub/ident/servers
- DIR
- QUIT
-
- This will send you a small page of information on how to retrieve files
- and directory listings, and also a directory listing of the files in the
- "pub/ident/servers" directory.
