- I seem to have encountered a problem using version 10 of
- the Crynwr packet drivers for Western Digital cards
- (WD8003E.COM) that does not exist with earlier versions. As I
- have seen no reference to this problem, I infer it probably results
- from some special interaction that I cannot determine. Here I
- describe the problem and some of the tests I have done to try and
- locate the source. This is the conclusion of months of irritation so
- I am hoping that it will help anyone who has experienced anything
- similar. Also, of course, I would be thrilled if a resolution could
- be found.
- The problem appears as lost key strokes. This is often
- referred to as the "sticky shift keys" problem, because it frequently
- results in the Shift, Control, or Alt keys being "stuck" on, ie. as
- if they were being depressed when they are not, when the up
- stroke on those keys is lost. This problem is usually associated
- with TSRs that hook the keyboard interrupt (software interrupt 09,
- IRQ 1). I experience this problem when using the packet driver
- in conjunction with: QEMM, Novell IPX (both the BYU and the
- Intel), and Desqview (this is my normal configuration). I had the
- problem for months without being able to locate the source. The
- difficulty is intermittent and unpredictable (but guaranteed to drive
- one mad).
- During this time I eliminated many possible sources of the
- apparent conflict. These include: QEMM was run with and
- without stealth and with numerous variations in its settings, all the
- network drivers were run in both high and low memory, all
- programs hooking Int 9 were removed, all the specially written
- drivers and programs mean to fix problems with keyboard
- interrupts were tried, both the hardware and software interrupts
- used by the packet drivers were varied, the computer was changed
- (to another that was identical), the motherboard was changed (AMI
- & Acer), a different video board was tried (WD Paradise &
- Diamond Speedstar), a different network board (both WD Elite 16
- 10BaseT boards, but with different chip sets), different versions of
- the Novell drivers, and highly varied software. I have made other
- tests that I can detail to anyone interested. I use the latest versions
- of all the programs and drivers. I had lengthy interactions with
- the technical assistance departments of varied programs who were
- all mystified.
- I have now discovered that the problem goes away when I
- revert to version 9 of the Crynwr driver. I retrieved another copy
- of the version 10 driver from two sources to make sure that mine
- was not corrupted. I have tried shifting back and forth between
- the two and confirmed that the problem arises only when using
- version 10.
