  33.   this you should check out DesqView/X.  It might be more than
  34.   you need or cost more than you want to pay, even though the
  35.   price in September 'might' be acceptable to many of us.

  40. Yes, I quite agree, and we already have a copy, but in addition to
  41. the Desqview/X you need Quarterdeck's TCP/IP Manager, AND the FTP
  42. kernel (or soon a TCP/IP kernel from Novell...). This just about
  43. triples the price; we're talking very serious bucks, and we ARE
  44. eventually going to have several systems running DVX, but for our
  45. typical low-budget NCSA Telnet user the economics make no sense.
  46. Also there are much more limited applications than would warrant
  47. shelling out the big bucks. I think Quarterdeck made a serious mistake in
  48. going for the Novell market instead of the TCP/IP world.

  52. An aside: All that hype from Microsoft, Lotus, Novell etc. about
  53. e-mail and WANs I think is ridiculous. Why are all these companies
  54. re-inventing what we in the Unix world have had for years? It's the
  55. same logic which  hypes up Windows and keeps MS-DOS alive as
  56. the primary PC OS (on 486's no less ... absurd !). And all this
  57. silly rubbish about Unix systems being "user-unfriendly" or
  58. "needing a guru to run": setting up the memory layout
  59. on a PC these days is far more esoteric than bringing up a
  60. Unix workstation. It reminds me of the absurdities of
  61. JCL (now who on this group knows what THAT is ?)

  67. for the PC will cost ?
