- I have a query regarding the telnet protocol and Domain Name Servers.
-
- The problem:
-
- Our setup is a smallish ethernet (aprox. 20 hosts), with an NCS server
- plus several terminal servers to handle the large number of dumb terminals.
- One of the hosts is used as a DNS. When attempting to connect from a
- terminal server to selected machines (using the telnet protocol, I believe)
- we did not get a response. These selected machines all appeared to have one
- thing in common - they used the DNS. The host acting as the DNS seemed ok,
- except we could not get out to these machines. Rebooting this host cleared
- the problem.
-
- The question:
-
- When connecting via the telnet protocol does the host attempt to find out
- where you are? Many machines say 'last logged in from .....' giving the
- host name that you last connected from. Could it be that the Name Server
- is being queried for this?
-
- Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
-
- Many thanks for any ideas.
