- Here are my thoughts after using most of these for quite some time.
-
- Inter*Poll - While it hasn't been upgraded for quite some time now, it is
- still a very useful tool for several things. I wouldn'twant to be without it.
- You can get a list of zones and services in each one. You can ping a specific
- node either with EP or responder packets. While the timers are too short for a
- large WAN, it does work OK for LAN or MAN type environments.
-
- RouterCheck - This is probably the first tool that I use when troubleshooting
- network problems on an Internet. It gives very useful information, lets you
- look into routing tables easily to see potential problems, and makes it much
- easier to see where that unexplained zone name comes from. The latest version
- has the beginnings of some SNMP (over AppleTalk) management hooks which will
- become more important over time.
-
- Net Watchman - This tool is good when you are worried about crucial services
- going away. Things like mail, file, and print servers are the most normal use
- for this. Of all the ones that you listed, this is the only one that I don't
- use on a regular basis, mostly because I don't run any production servers. For
- those who do, however, I think that it would be essential.
-
- EtherPeek & NetMinder/Ethernet - I use both of these tools on an almost daily
- basis. I find that each one has most of the features of the other, but the 5%
- difference between the two helps me choose which one to use for a specific
- task. I feel that EtherPeek has more flexible decoding features while
- NetMinder does a little better job of filtering. Granted, they have other
- differences, too, but those are the ones that are most important to me.
-
- In general, the list you have selected are all some of the most useful network
- management products around for AppleTalk. There are a few others that I also
- use on occasion, but these are definitely at the top of my list.
