  16. Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratory is a rapidly expanding
  17. multi-program national laboratory with missions in the areas of Energy
  18. Research and Environmental Preservation, Remediation and Restoration.
  19. We conduct over 1,700 research programs for more than 94 federal and
  20. state agencies, 302 industry clients, and 9 foreign countries, valued
  21. at over $350 million.  Our programs have created immediate needs for
  22. qualified Computer Science professionals.
  23.  
  24. A major program for basic and applied research in the molecular
  25. sciences is underway at Battelle.  Our current significant capability
  26. in scientific computing is being expanded to support the theoretical
  27. and experimental elements of this program.  We are seeking researchers
  28. with expertise in parallel scientific computing technologies in the
  29. following areas:
  30.  
  31.   Performance Modeling and Machine Evaluation
  32.  
  33.    . Performance modeling of scientific applications on MIMD massively
  34.      parallel computers; development of modeling methods and tools;
  35.      evaluation of parallel algorithms, programming environments, and
  36.      machines.
  37.  
  38.    . Requires skill and experience with internals of compilers and
  39.      language translators; familiarity with computational chemistry
  40.      methods.
  41.  
  42.   Operating System Development
  43.  
  44.    . Develop and evaluate enhancements to the communications software
  45.      kernel of message-passing multicomputers; modify application
  46.      programs to exploit communications enhancements.
  47.  
  48.    . Requires skill and experience with assembly language,
  49.      communication hardware interfaces, and operating system
  50.      internals.
  51.  
  52.   Application and Toolset Development
  53.  
  54.    . Assist application developers in evaluating and using
  55.      experimental parallel programming environments; evaluate,
  56.      develop, and maintain toolsets; identify, develop, and evaluate
  57.      parallel numerical methods.
  58.  
  59.    . Requires skill and experience developing production quality
  60.      programs; numerical analysis including linear algebra and PDE's.
  61.  
  62. These openings all require an MS or PhD in Computer Science, with
  63. graduate work or 1 year experience in some computational science
  64. discipline, or PhD in Chemistry or Physics with BS or equivalent
  65. experience in Computer Science.  Three years experience in parallel
  66. computing is desired.
