- NO!! You MUST install DECwindows before installing Motif. The internal battles
- over who is responsible for what are not worth the time to go into, but all
- device support comes from the VMS group and is part of basic DECwindows. The
- fonts come from VMS as well. There is a different group doing Motif. The Motif
- installation procedure assumes DECwindows is there and things will not work if
- it's not.
-
- Odd aside: The Motif distribution includes 75 and 100 dpi fonts. I recently
- switched to a new workstation and wanted the 100 DPI fonts. No problem. I ran
- VMSINSTAL on DECW$MOTIF and selected only the 100 DPI fonts. The program told
- me that 75 DPI fonts and 100 DPI fonts would be installed.
-
- No problem. Since 75 DPI fonts are required, it probably ignores the response
- to teh question and always installs them. (But why ask the question?)
-
- The installation procedure ran for about 15 minutes and, Shazam! No 100 DPI
- fonts. I found the 100 DPI fonts in DECW$MOTIF010.E which was not even
- unpacked. Hmmm. Time to call CSC. The guy there informed me that even though
- the installation procedure asks about installing the fonts, it never really
- does anything with them. DECwindows is the only source of the fonts, so I had
- to do a DECW$TAILOR to load the fonts.
-
- Does this story confuse you? If not, please try to explain it to me.
-
- I asked if this would be fixed in DECW$MOTIF011 and was told that it would not
- and that there were no plans to ever fix it. (Note: CSC folks have been known
- to be in error on future products.)
