- Robert,
-
- It's entirely likely that I just didn't set the options right on the board.
-
- I have a fairly old Newbury Data 157 MB drive with 1224 tracks. What
- happened was nothing. I would boot the installation disk, the OS/2
- logo screen would appear, then it would display "Loading, please wait..."
- and just sit there thrashing the boot floppy (slowly) for awhile. Then
- that would go silent and then... still nothing. If you let it sit long
- enough, the screen would blank and then "Loading, please wait..." would
- appear near the top of the screen. Again, the boot floppy would thrash
- for awhile followed by... nothing.
-
- The setup options screen for the UltraStor did not match the illustration
- in my machine's manual. I should have called Gateway and bitched, but I
- simply tried the options (there weren't very many), but never found a
- combination that worked... with OS/2, that is... several combinations
- worked fine with MSDOS. Of course, there was one combination that worked:
- no mapping, but then you could only use the first 1024 tracks... I got
- mad and decided that I was going to put the UltraStor back in my wife's
- machine at my earliest convenience (her 80 MB drive will be fine with
- the UltraStor).
-
- My trusty old WD1007A-WA2 works with the drive and OS/2 likes it just
- fine. Its formatter insists on stealing one sector per track for use as
- a spare and that costs some space. Makes the disk look defect free, though.
