- I need to port a custom communications protocol to OS/2, and have been
- having a bit of trouble digging up information on available software
- and interfaces. It will be running over ethernet at the link level
- (directly specifying the ethernet destination address, type code,
- and data). We would like to be able to run this protocol alongside
- an IP stack, but can live without IP if we have to.
-
- I've been working with IP networks for several years, but am new
- to PC networking. From what I've been able to find out so far,
- it looks like I need to interface with an NDIS driver. I've got
- the NDIS spec on order. I would prefer to use a supported software
- package, such as IBM's TCP/IP 1.2.1 or something from FTP Software,
- to gain access to the NDIS driver through a socket- or streams-like
- interface, but have been unable to determine if these packages do
- what I need to do. Several calls to sales offices have been less
- than enlightening.
-
- Is anyone aware of software with these capabilities, from the above
- vendors or anyone else?
-
- I also need to select LAN cards to use for this port. Speed isn't
- particularly critical, but reliability is, preferably with low CPU
- overhead. We will be using an ISA bus machine, probably with thick
- ethernet (thin might be an option). I would appreciate any
- recommendations, or information on cards to avoid.
-
- Thanks in advance.
