- In a word, yes, provided you have the right LAN adapter (with
- bootstrap code). The scheme works particularly well with IBM Token
- Ring (hint, hint :-)), but it should work OK with other adapters.
-
- It is called "Remote IPL" in IBM-speak. My suggestion: "Contact your
- IBM representative for details." You can also learn about other
- interesting features like remote installation, remote installation of
- CSDs, and other network-friendly features in OS/2 2.0. The IBM office
- here in Chicago holds free seminars on these and other topics; perhaps
- you are fortunate enough to have a similar resource nearby.
-
- >Given the above, can I junk the windows and dos support?
-
- You always can. Simply put PROTECTONLY=YES in your CONFIG.SYS.

-
- Not quite. NCR uses OS/2 1.3 as the operating system in its automatic
- teller machines. The operating system is evidently stripped down --
- no Presentation Manager -- but boots directly from the ATM (possibly
- with some sort of solid state "disk" -- I'm speculating a bit here).
- ATM network links are often slow, so it really wouldn't make sense (in
- terms of both speed and cost) to boot the ATM from a bank's central
- computer.
-
- Incidently, that's Automatic Teller Machine, not Adobe Type Manager,
- in the paragraph above.

-
- Hmmm... An interesting application.
-
- It is certainly doable, although this isn't exactly the proper forum
- to discuss this implementation in any detail. It also depends on how
- "elegant" you want this box to be. :-)
-
- I should point out that QNX might fit the bill here, but it all
- depends on what applications you want to run. So you have some other
- options, too.
-
- My suggestion would be to make friends with an IBM representative, sit
- down, and have a nice, long, frank talk.
