- The FIFO buffer is used by OS/2, and it is ESPECIALLY nice to have a 16550
- UAR when running OS/2. Depending on your computer, you MAY or MAY NOT
- actually NEED the 16550, but in ALL CASES you will benefit from it.

-
- It is very logical. The 16550 itself doesn't provide any higher data
- throughput that the 16450. Because of the FIFO in the 16550, it doesn't
- hug the CPU as much as the 16450 do, but that is not a problem with a
- modem. The internal modem have a 16550, because that's the UART the computer
- will see and use. What UART the external model has, is of no interest as
- that UART will not be seen by the computer at all. Instead it is the UART of
- the serial card that will be seen by the computer.

- I have just ordered the DigiCom Scout+ via the usenet offer. V.32" + fax
- external modem for 279 USD. Mail wolfgang@netcom.com if you are interested.
- I have no opinion on the quality of the modem, or other modems in general.
- I am using two Octocom OSI8596 V.32" modems now, and am very satisfied with
- them.
