  20. The FIFO buffer is used by OS/2, and it is ESPECIALLY nice to have a 16550
  21. UAR when running OS/2.  Depending on your computer, you MAY or MAY NOT
  22. actually NEED the 16550, but in ALL CASES you will benefit from it.

  27. It is very logical.  The 16550 itself doesn't provide any higher data
  28. throughput that the 16450.  Because of the FIFO in the 16550, it doesn't
  29. hug the CPU as much as the 16450 do, but that is not a problem with a
  30. modem.  The internal modem have a 16550, because that's the UART the computer
  31. will see and use.  What UART the external model has, is of no interest as
  32. that UART will not be seen by the computer at all.  Instead it is the UART of
  33. the serial card that will be seen by the computer.

  42. I have no opinion on the quality of the modem, or other modems in general.
  43. I am using two Octocom OSI8596 V.32" modems now, and am very satisfied with
  44. them.
