- I thought I would pass the following information to owners of Gateway2000
- (or those contemplating purchase of a GW2000). I recently received one
- of their 486DX2-50 EISA machines. Originally, the sales droid told me
- that the SCSI controller was an Adaptec 1742. However, when the machine
- arrived, it had an UltraStor 24F instead. From reading this newsgroup, I
- understood that the UltraStor would work with the generic driver provided
- by IBM. Tech support at UltraStor confirmed this and added that performance
- would be degraded. UltraStor was, however, working feverishly on the OS/2 2.0
- drivers, he assured me. When I pressed him for details, he admitted that they
- have not reached the beta test stage. Well, I decided that I did not want
- to wait and called tech support at Gateway. After being on hold for about
- two minutes, I was connected to one of the tech support staff. She said that
- I could have the Adaptec instead and it would arrive tomorrow or the next day,
- including all necessary software and instructions. Pretty good service in my
- opinion. Of course, I have no interest in Gateway2000, Adaptec, or UltraStor.
