- This posting is a caveat concerning use of the IOMEGA Bernoulli Box
- Device Drivers for OS/2 v2.0.
-
- Installation of the driver consistantly crashed my machine during
- bootup just after getting the message from the Iomega driver that OAD
- installation completed successfully. I could not use my machine until
- I removed the DEVICE=C:\OAD\OS2.SYS command from C:\CONFIG.SYS.
-
- I found upon trying to reboot from an os/2 v2.0 1.4 meg boot floppy,
- that disks c: & e:, having been stopped without a proper shutdown,
- were inaccessible. These drives would only become accessible *after*
- successfully executing chkdsk /f on them. However, c: & e: were
- formatted as HPFS. Chkdsk cannot fix an HPFS drive without using the
- file uhpfs.dll which is 178,000 bytes long and does not fit on the
- 1.4 meg boot floppy created by the rexx procedure MKBOOT1.CMD which I
- obtained from hobbes.nmsu.edu.
-
- Fortunately, I was able to copy CHKDSK.COM and UHPFS.DLL from another
- OS/2 machine onto a floppy. I then ran CHKDSK.COM from this floppy to
- repair my c: and e: drives so that I could again use my system.
-
- I have reported the problem with the malfunctioning driver to Iomega.
-
- I strongly encourage anyone using HPFS on the c: drive to make sure
- that they have a bootable a: b: pair of os/2 diskettes with chkdsk
- software included so that they can unlock their c: drive after a
- system crash.
-
- Having survived this first problem with repairing an HPFS disk after a
- system crash, I'm now even more sold on HPFS than ever. I only wish
- now that IBM would make HPFS more POSIX compliant by making HPFS
- case-sensitive.
