Well, looks like this is the bug! I found the docs for my modem, and moved it
to com2, and put a serial port with 16550A on com1. Works for now. Note that
the mode command turns the 16550A on for com1, but if I put a mode command for
com2, the internal modem, the computer locks when I run a DOS communications
program! (So I don't do it! :-)
