- As you may recall, my shutdown had stopped working, and I had several programs
- running on startup, whose icon-shading did not correctly reflect whether they
- were open or not. I did some experiments with one such program, which
- happened to be "view.exe cmdref.inf," the Command Reference. I created a
- new program-reference object to call view.exe, and it inherited the same grey-
- icon disease. I copied view.exe to a new file, and created a reference to it.
- This also inherited the disease. Therefore, it would seem that when OS/2 gets
- into the state mine is in now, it does so by modifying the executable files
- themselves (presumably the "extended attributes") rather than any reference
- to them.
-
- I know c.o.o.advocacy is a separate group, but may I be allowed to opine here
- that, if I have diagnosed the problem correctly, it is a reasonable design for
- a virus, but a *very bad* one for an operating system.
