- The problem was that IBM invited video card makers to the party - but hardly
- anyone turned up! Microsoft had them convinced that OS/2 was going to sink
- with out trace.
-
- IBM can't - shouldn't have too - write video cards for the dozen or more
- popular implementations of SVGA. Trident has done *very* well out of OS/2 so
- far. I know of several people who have junked their existing video cards and
- bought Trident-based cards purely for the OS/2 drivers. OK, they aren't the
- fastest cards in the world, but they are a cheap alternative and the deliver
- the goods - seamless Windows at 800x600x16. All the higher resolutions and
- colours are supported, but not seamless.
-
- I was using the 800x600x256 driver, but I found it slowish and I really didn't
- need the extra colours for anything other than Wolfestien 3D. Changing video
- drivers under OS/2 is so easy, I just use DDINSTAL when i want a round of
- shootem-ups!
-
- IBM provided the interface for the drivers. They did their job. Now the video
- card manufacturers are busy writing drivers - even REALTEK are writing OS/2
- drivers.
