- I have recently been in contact with Mountain Network Solutions in
- Campbell, CA regarding OS/2 tape backup hardware and software and
- have the following info the net might be interested in. I have
- received several brochures, etc but no price list. If I do receive
- a price list, I'll post an update. I do speculate about prices later
- on though.
-
- This is a quote regarding using my existing Filesafe 4000 unit:
-
- "We currently do not have any OS/2 support for our TD product line
- (Filesafe 4000, 8000 and 8500). IBM does not currently support floppy
- based tape drives under OS/2."
-
- Darn, looks like I might as well take my 4000 unit out and use it in
- a different PC. I then asked about SCSI based units and received a
- more favorable reply along with several brochures. I'll summarize
- the info below:
-
- Filesafe Tape Backup Software (what a generic name :-). I'm describing
- only the OS/2 related info, there's a couple pages of other stuff:
-
- * Supports both the OS/2 FAT and HPFS directory restoration.
- * True protected mode application
- * Both DOS and OS/2 versions included with Filesafe OS/2 software for
- use with dual boot systems.
- * Supports IBM OS/2 V1.2, 1.3 and 2.0
-
- I assume this software runs only on Mountain drives, which are SCSI
- based using Mountain's own interface card supplied with the drive.
- The drives are available in these storage capacities: 250, 525MB and
- 1.0 GB in SCSI format and 2.0 and 2.2 GB formats using a DAT cartridge
- and 8mm cartridge respectfully.
-
- I'm guessing the SCSI drives are in the $700 - $1000 range and I
- remember someone on the net saying the tape backup software was $179,
- so this whole system isn't what you would call cheap.
-
- As a side question, supposing one did buy Mountain's SCSI card. What
- do you suppose the odds would be of running a hard disk and CD-ROM off
- the same card? I don't know enough about SCSI to comment, but from
- what I've read here, I gather there are incompatibilities between
- vendors.o
-
- That's it for now, any further comments or info are welcome.
