- The Amiga has special hardware for doing graphics, sound, and
- processing in parallel. The AmigaDOS operating system can run
- multiple apps at once, but it doesn't provide facilities to keep them
- out of each other's memory space. This results in the dreaded "Guru
- Meditation Error Numbers" that plague users running unfriendly
- applications.
-
- >now will os/2 multi task? or unix? I have never seen them operate and dont know
-
- Both will. OS/2 has been designed with miltitasking in mind from the
- ground up. Version 2.0 will create virtual machines for running DOS
- and Windows applications as well. It requires a 386 with at least 6MB
- of memory (ignore that 4MB "requirement" on the box if you value your
- sanity) and at least 32MB of free disk space (I gave mine a 50MB
- partition all to itself and its mostly happy). OS/2 1.3 can be gotten
- for the 286 user, but its DOS compatibility isn't that compatible and
- it tends to bring down the rest of OS/2 - the only safe way to use
- OS/2 1.3 is to disable DOS compatibility, then it's almost
- crash-proof.
-
- Unix is also a very robust multitasker. Its problems are: large
- hardware requirements (large disk and as much memory as you can get -
- typical minimum installation is a 100MB disk and 8MB of memory), and
- difficult to maintain. Unix maintenance shouldn't really be attempted
- by a new Unix user.
-
- >well someone please help what should I buy for good multi tasking?
-
- If you want to stick with a PC, I'd recommend OS/2 2.0. It will have
- problems with some badly-behaved programs (mostly high-end games), but
- these programs will fail to work with most (if not all) multitaskters.
- If you have some programs like this, you may want to keep DOS around
- for them - OS/2 provides this option in the form of the boot manager
- or Dual Boot system.
-
- >and oh yea do you have to by special programs for os/2 I mean like for os/2
- >kinda like wordperfect for windows?
-
- There are some. More will come in the near future.
