- In tests over the weekend, I've pinned down the problem to being Windows 3.0
- needing disk caching. Indeed, it *does* work with SMARTDRV.EXE, as long as
- the disk read *and write* caching is enabled. There even seems to be a slight
- improvement in performance over equivalently configured SMARTDRV.SYS.
-
- Windows 3.0 corrupts itself with *either* SMARTDRV if caching is disabled.
-
- My needs are to disable caching on a SyQuest removable hard disk drive. Since
- this is possible with the <-> switch with SMARTDRV.EXE, but not with .SYS, I
- thought it would be ideal to use the .EXE version.
-
- So, the conclusion:
- I'm currently using SMARTDRV.EXE with caching enabled on the fixed disk, and
- disabled on the SyQuest. This will solve one problem on a system-wide basis,
- but I don't *dare* access the SyQuest from within WINDOWS lest I corrupt the
- disk, my WINDOWS .GRP, .INI, and .INF files, etc.
-
- Any users who have found a way around this one; I'm all eyes!
-
- Hope this info can help someone.
