- %I write
- %>NO! NO! NO! As the original poster (and beginning to regret it!),
- %>Windows is held on the network, the permanant swapfile would be held on
- %>a local hard disc which has physical access from anyone who cares to
- %>enter the room.
- %
- %But, your original query <BsEKL6.16t@brunel.ac.uk> said, and I quote:
- %
- % What I mean is, if someone does some work on a machine under windows
- % with a permanent swapfile linked to a network, saves all data on said
- % network and exits, can anyone else come alone later and edit the same
- % swapfile to discover data.
- %
- %which sure sounds a lot like you meant the swapfile was on the network.
-
- My apologies. My original text was ambiguous. However, I believe that it
- is IMPOSSIBLE to have a permanant swapfile on a network, as Windows uses
- direct disc access to get information out of this swapfile.
-
- %In actuality, the presence of a network is totally irrelevant to your
- %original query. The original user may have saved his data onto a floppy
- %disk instead of a network and your query is still the same.
-
- I agree with this.
-
- %Then you write further:
- %>Oh, well, back to the temporary swapfiles........
- %
- %But in MS-DOS, a deleted file is merely marked as deleted. Its bits
- %are still intact on the disk until they happen to be overwritten.
- %So this isn't secure either.
-
- Unfortunately, this is correct. I think that I will just have to tell
- people just how secure the system is, and not to do any highly
- confidential work in the classrooms!
-
- I think that 'MS-DOS' and 'security' should not be mentioned in the same
- sentence.
-
- Thanks for all who answered my original posting.
