- I've just wasted 45 min on a long-distance call to MS's
- W4W support and got nowhere; maybe the net can help
- with the following three problems related to the automatic
- referencing feature in W4W 2.0?
-
- 1. When inserting a _previously_ defined reference (by
- clicking it twice, copying, going to a new place, and
- pasting), the W4W gives it a new reference number and
- copies it into the ref list as a new entry. This is as
- idiotic as it can be, although the techie at MS initially
- claimed that references should always be numbered consecutively.
- Is there a way to get the automatic ref renumbering to work
- as it should (i.e., to have the previous ref number inserted
- and not having it repeated in the ref list?)
-
- 2. Is there a way to have each automatically numbered reference
- followed by, let's say, a right parenthesis, or to be enclosed
- in square brackets, as some journal formats require?
- (I know, I know, I can do it by inserting the
- superscripted ")" manually, but ...)
-
- 3. This is probably to much to expect from MS, but is
- automatic referencing smart enough to print XXX[3-6]
- instead of XXX[3,4,5,6]? My old troff wasn't smart enough, either...
-
- If there is no solution to problem #1, then W4W is
- missing a feature essential to those writing any
- scientific reports and papers.
-
- Thanks for any helpful hints.
