  13. First off, my configuration:
  14. 486/33 w 10MB RAM, no swap
  15. mouse, ATI VGA wonder (early version), 2 65MB RLL hard disks
  16.  
  17. Kernel: 0.97.1 + grow_buffers patch + selection 1.3
  18. + ext FS (latest version, no problems!)
  19. + msdos FS ALPA 7 (no problems!)
  20. and gcc v2.2.2d

  23. If you'll all recall, about a week ago I mentioned that if I did a
  24. make clean; make dep; make all
  25. in /usr/src/linux the kernel would get built in a 
  26. little over 12 minutes (a personal best :-).

  28. If, however, I did it over and over again (a torture test :-)
  29. subsequent runs would be slower and slower and finally the system
  30. would die.

  32. I have since compiled GnuChess -- when I run Gnuchess immediately
  33. after a reboot, Gnu searches +4000 nodes/sec
  34. If I recompile the kernel (as above) and run Gnu again its search
  35. speed is down to 200-400 nodes/sec -- down by at least a factor of
  36. 10x!

  38. This is a data point, not a complaint!  Any suggestions as to what
  39. might be going on (ie what I've done wrong :-) would be most welcome.

  41. Since I don't usually have dire need to recompile the kernel during a
  42. day's work, the system is quite responsive in general -- it's been 
  43. working flawlessly with my Gateway Telepath at 14400 baud even with 
  44. a kernel recompile in another VC.
