- Hi. I had no idea of how ignorant the Linux community is of the
- general concept of "free" software (in the FSF sense).
-
- No, just the vocal members of comp.os.linux. \begin{snide mode} I
- wonder how much overlap there is between the people who have been
- flaming about how Linux isn't a real operating system unless it has
- turn-key installation releases, with lots of documentation --- and the
- people who demand that Linux be only available free of charge. TANSTAAFL...
- \end{snide mode}
-
- To quote Richard Stallman: "Free software is not the same as free beer."
- Linux is free software. That doesn't mean that it will always cost you
- nothing to get a copy of it. At a very broad level, by being a
- student at a univeristy, your tuition is paying for your Internet
- connection through which you are able to use FTP --- so even if you are
- using anonymous FTP to get Linux, it is still costing you something,
- whether you realize it or not. By charging $60 or $600 or $6000 for a
- distribution of Linux, the distribution cost is just being made
- explicit. The whole point of the copyleft is to make sure that no one
- can charge monopoly prices on the distributions. If someone is making
- money charging $60,000 a copy for Linux, there is nothing stopping you
- from going into business trying to sell it at $6,000 a copy, and there's
- nothing stopping a third person to sell it at $60.00 a copy. Someone
- could even try selling a five disk pack for $0.60 a copy, although that
- person might go out of business.
-
- The wisdom of the GNU copyleft is very difficult to explain to
- someone stuck in the MSDOS world way of thinking.
-
- Well, most of the people who were originally interested in Linux (and, I
- might add, doing most of the work it seems) came from the Unix world ---
- and most of them quite understood the wisdom of the GNU copyleft. After
- all, most of Linux's utilities are from the FSF, and that's why the
- Linux kernel is under the GNU copyleft.
-
- I would be interested in finding out what the demographics of the people
- who have been whining (and not doing any work) on the newsgroup. I
- don't know of any way of getting an accurate sample, though.

- P.S. Sorry if my comments seem a bit acerbic; the recent spew of
- comments (from many different people, not just one) have just been
- rather infuriating, and I couldn't hold myself from responding any more.
