- I've been trying to get Linux to boot off my hard disk using shoelace. I've
- read the readme and look through the FAQ, but I still can't get it to work.
- I'm sure I just don't understand what I'm _really_ supposed to do, so if
- someone could straighten me out I would appriciate it.
-
- My system has 2 SCSI disks; the first has DOS/Windows and OS/2 partitions
- as well as the OS/2 bootmanager. The second drive is set up as follows:
-
- 20MB primary partition -- DOS/Windows temporary scratch area
- 80MB extended partition for Linux with the following logical drives:
- 22MB Linux root -- /dev/sdb5
- 8MB Linux swap -- /dev/sdb6
- 50MB Linux usr -- /dev/sdb7
-
- Note that the device names are new, following the 0.97 rootimage convention.
- So, I assume: /dev/sdb == second hard disk, /dev/sdb1-4 == four primary
- partitions and /dev/sdb5-15 == logicals in extended partition.
-
- This is what I did: Installed Linux in its partitions and got it running
- booting from a floppy. Did a "laceup /dev/sdb5 wini". Put shoelace in the
- root directory and config in etc. Edited config to point to my bootimage.
- Added the Linux root partition to the OS/2 bootmanager.
-
- Now, when I star my machine and select Linux from bootmanager, the screen
- clears, I get a beep and about 20 chars of garbage at the top of my screen.
- Then it locks.
-
- I know I've done something wrong, but I can't figure out what I _should_ have
- done fromt the shoelace readme. I know about the problem booting a partition
- not on a cylinder boundary; how would I go about checking that this is not
- my problem? What steps should I use to get this up and running? Thanks for
- any help.
-
- And, the most thanks of all to Linus and those who have put so much effort
- into Linux. The system is great! I've had fewer problems than with Windows
- and OS/2!
