- When I took the OS course my senior year, we were using Xinu.
-
- Now, Xinu is targeted for the educational market. It's got a nice book,
- and everything. I imagine Minix is similar, but perhaps more expensive.
-
- But Xinu, or at least the implementation we were playing with, was not
- nearly as complete as Linux is now. Our semester project was to implement
- some security to the file system. The previous semester project had been
- to add a directory tree, ours was to add a login with usernames, passwords,
- and uid's on the file's. Along with protections and the whole bit.
-
- And even then in was only a single user, single tasking OS. Maybe the grad
- students were working on making it multi-tasking, I don't recall.
-
- So, IMO, Linux is much more complete. But Linux doesn't have a nice book.
-
- So maybe it isn't suitable for education. But I don't know how we could
- judge that, as it's mostly up to the instructor to decide what they want
- to do.
-
- In my case, I think maybe an OS which is too refined is not good, as it
- does have as many potential projects for the students to work on.
-
- I guess I don't understand why some people wish to fight linux coming
- into widespread usage. If you don't want people to use something, then
- it shouldn't be released to the public. It was my general impression
- that Linus kind of planned for people to use this.
