- : [Another FAQ topic.]
-
- I will add this as a recommendation.
- :
- : It *really* only depends on what you want to use it for. 10 MB is plenty
- : for just the operating system and man pages. You may want to leave some
- : room for swap space, some room for imported external software, and, depending
- : on how much you plan to use it, a lot for user files. A separate filesystem
- : for this is suggested.
- :
- : If you're still unsure but plan to use the system moderately, I suggest
- : something between 20 and 40 MB.
- :
- : [I think it's time for a 4.0 FAQ.]

- RSNBNY
- Real Soon Now But Not Yet! :) Why?
-
-
- 1, My copy of 4.0 is still on order. (It is hard to write about
- something one has not experienced... :) (As some pointy eared
- fellow said, "It is difficult to supply the answer, when one
- does not understand the question"). In the PRN386, I put just
- such a note about the need of the 386 version FAQ.
-
- 2, Aside from the larger memory utilization, allowing a larger
- address space, there is not a great deal of difference in the
- installation/setup/administration over 3.2 *known to me* at this
- time. The opportunities have, without question, increased.
- Many features already in 3.2 have been enhanced in 4.0. So,
- what technical information can be added to the 3.2 FAQ to help
- a new/prospective 4.0 user that is not covered already in the
- PRN386? Hopefully, we will have more information as soon as
- a greater base is installed of 4.0 users.
-
- 3. I always welcome text from users who wish to contribute to the
- FAQ. I have never turned down text submitted to me other than
- editing it to try and keep the FAQ smaller in size. Please
- contribute information you wish to see in the FAQ!
-
- Note, the PRN386 (Press Release Notes for the 386 release) posted
- with the FAQ for 3.2 covers the Ram/Disk question in marketing hype
- form, something like "Will run in 1MB of RAM and 20 Meg Hard Drive".
-
- No doubt the FAQ for 4.0 is right around the corner, (Maybe next
- month?) but, I could not justify a release of the text when, as
- keeper of the FAQ at the present time, can not write objectively
- and from the perspective of a user since I do not have 4.0 yet,
- and the discussions in comp.os.coherent really IMHO not centered
- on 4.0 yet, but, a great mix of questions about 4.0 in general.
-
- We will see if MWC likes what I do with the FAQ or not. If I get
- my copy quickly, then they want to see the 4.0 FAQ, if not... :)
- Joking of course. (Maybe!) :)
