- Worse, on many modems, if login echoes the result codes back to the modem
- while it's still handshaking, it will cause the connection to be aborted.

- Configure the modems to be quiet (ATQ1E0) "permanently", so that when
- carrier is lost or DTR is dropped, the modem will reset to that state. Then
- have your dialer scripts start out with ATQ0E1..., which will enable echo
- and result codes during dial-outs.
