  18. It occurs to me that the problem might not have anything to do with
  19. virtual vs. real mode.  Perhaps it depends on whether or not the IDE
  20. is using expanded memory.  If you don't load QEMM or EMM386 then the
  21. IDE does not see any expanded memory available.  Perhaps you could
  22. test for this by booting QEMM with whatever switches are needed to
  23. turn off expanded memory emulation.
