  17. ANSI gets most of their revenue from selling their copyrighted standards
  18. documents, which cost about $50 each.  So a CD-ROM with copies of 25
  19. standards would have to cost about $1000 to give them similar revenue.

  21. Everyone agrees that particularly for computer standards it would be
  22. really nice to make them available via FTP, CD-ROM, etc.  But so far
  23. nobody has come up with a plausible way to make up for the lost revenue
  24. that ANSI needs to stay in business.  An advantage of the current system
  25. is that standards are paid for by people who actually use them.
