  15. We are about to embark on a large software project that will constitute a
  16. key component of future products to come.  One of our options is to
  17. use C++ as the implementation language.  Unfortunately, we have had little
  18. experience using the language and its environment, so we aren't sure
  19. whether this may be a good decision or not.

  21. If anyone out there in Netland has developed large projects with C++,
  22. we would appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommendations
  23. in this world.   Points of particular interest are:
  24.  
  25.    - What has it bought you?  (Not what is it SUPPOSED to buy you.)
  26.  
  27.    - Learning time?  This is an estimated 10 (hu)man-year project
  28.      and will be staffed by experienced C programmers (5+ years).
  29.      What is it going to take to get people to thinking C++ instead
  30.      of traditional C?
  31.  
  32.    - Maturity of C++ development environments?  What tools are needed
  33.      and/or are essential?  We are presently using public domain tools
  34.      such as Imake and CVS for our C product development.  (It seems as
  35.      though a native C++ debugger is an essential).

  37.    - C and C++ co-existence?  This new software will constitute only a
  38.      piece of larger products that follow.
  39.  
  40.    - C++ and X/Motif co-existence?  The software is intended for use
  41.      in an X/Motif environment.
