  25. A major nit: GIFs are 8-bit, but the SVGA modes (256-color) on these cards
  26. are 6-bit - 256 out of 256K colors, not 256 out of 16M colors. GIFs on a
  27. 640x480x24-bit screen look a little better than on a 640x480x256-col
  28. screen. If you don't believe me, write a program which displays half the
  29. image in 6-bit per gun resolution (simulating a standard SVGA screen), and
  30. the other half in the full 8-bits per gun. The difference becomes
  31. especially apparent when you start blowing up the image.

  33. Summary: for GIFs on a PC, Truecolor > SVGA > Hicolor.
