- In article <5683@m1.cs.man.ac.uk> lilleyc@cs.man.ac.uk (Chris Lilley) raises
- a couple of good points about FAQs and problems faced by comp.graphics.
- In talking about the flow of non-graphics questions into the group, he
- writes:
-
- > Similarly, most
- >of the postings about 'how do I display a GIF' are not because the
- >poster wants to back end their latest graphics program, but because
- >they want to display a scanned photo taken off the net. Most likely of
- >a military airplane, or semi naked women. Nothing much to do with
- >computer graphics.
- >
- >Because the title of this group does not explicitly state 'computer graphics',
- >many who want such tools post here on the assumption that this is what
- >the group is for.
-
- Even if the group's title were explicit, we'd still see a steady stream of
- questions about GIF and friends, because (a) that's what a lot of people are
- very interested in, (b) many are having problems, and (c) they're going
- right to where they think they can get answers. Barring a comp.gif group,
- a lot of those folks end up here. Thinking back over subject threads of
- the past few months, a healthy percentage (aside from the rather unpleasant
- and unfortute FAQ wars of late) seem to be of the "how to I convert GIF to
- <xyz>?" I don't believe that sections 7 and 8 of the current FAQ are yet
- up to helping these people out.
-
- There's an opportunity for someone here who has the time and interest to
- make a positive contribution to this group by collecting the information
- about GIF and friends, and either forwarding it to the current FAQ keeper
- or starting up a separate mini-FAQ dedicated to GIF and related issues.
- As Chris says, this doesn't have much to do with computer graphics, but
- it is in keeping with the goal of a FAQ.
