  21.     This is the second CALL FOR VOTES (CFV) for
  22. comp.graphics.animation.  A vote ACK (sans yay or nay) is included.
  23. Please check the list to make sure your vote was registered.
  24.  
  25.         Several existing newsgroups cover topics that are small parts
  26. of computer graphics animation, but no one group ties all these
  27. together, or discusses several points that are unique to this medium.
  28. Also, the use of computer animation has seen an incredible increase in
  29. the past couple of years, and is now prevalent in everyday visual
  30. media.  A forum for discussion and advancement of this topic is needed.
  31.  
  32.     One month ago an RFD was posted concerning the creation of the
  33. UNMODERATED newsgroup comp.graphics.animation.  Some discussion
  34. occurred (concerning pre-recorded animation vs. real-time animation,
  35. what level of machines the newsgroup would cover, and whether artistic
  36. quality should be discussed), and the charter was modified and
  37. reposted.  Since that time, there have been no more arguments, so I
  38. assume the matter settled.
  39.  
  40.     The finalized charter is included in this message below.  If
  41. you wish to see all of the discussion that occurred in news.groups
  42. concerning comp.graphics.animation, please email me (ddebry@dsd.es.com)
  43. and I'll mail you the entire, unedited debate.

  45.     Voting on the creation of the newsgroup comp.graphics.animation:

  50.     Anything in the subject line or body of the message will be
  51. considered comments and, as such, ignored.

  57. votes will be posted during the voting period.  Actual vote totals

  61. Charter for comp.graphics.animation
  62. -----------------------------------
  63. |    comp.graphics.animation will be a newsgroup where discussion
  64. | of the techinical aspects and technique of computer animation will
  65. | take place.  This *DOES* include (but is not limited to) such topics
  66. | as:
  67. |
  68. |     1] Hardware and software used for an end result of a computer
  69. | animated sequence.  These include modellers, renderers, animators,
  70. | etc.  This topic, however, is limited by a mention later in the
  71. | charter concerning threads that become TOO system specific.
  72. |
  73. |    2] Application of knowledge of other types of more "standard"
  74. | or "formal" animation to computer animation.
  75. |
  76. |    3] Discussion of the technical aspects or techniques used to
  77. | generate existing computer animations.
  78. |
  79. |    4] Forums for showing your own work and viewing other's
  80. | animations.  IE: Film & video shows/contests/competitions.  It's often
  81. | hard to know where to look to see computer animation, or where to get
  82. | your own work shown to the public.  Hopefully this will alleviate some
  83. | of the problem.

  85. |    This *DOES NOT* include (and is not limited to) such topics as:
  86. |
  87. |    1] Pure artistic commentary on an existing animation.  (IE:
  88. | "The computer animation in that movie was great!")  SOME artistic talk
  89. | is allowed (actually, encouraged), but only for the purpose of leading
  90. | to (or working in sync with) a more techinical discussion (IE: "How
  91. | did they do that nifty computer animation?").  After all, this is a
  92. | comp. group.  If you want to discuss just artistic merit, please do!
  93. | (I'll probably join you!), but do it in a rec.arts. group.
  94. | 
  95. |     2] Highly system specific conversations.  If a thread becomes
  96. | too dependant on a certain software package or hardware setup, it will
  97. | be encourgaed to move to the appropriate comp. or comp.sys group.
  98. |
  99. |    Obviously, since the group is not moderated, it will be
  100. | impossible to keep conversations topical.  However, posters will be
  101. | encouraged (by means of some mention in the newsgroup's FAQ) to take
  102. | their discussions to a more suitable newsgroup.
