- No hypothetical cases, please.
-
- There were *many* union horror stories from the SIGGRAPH conference
- week. The bottom line is the union guys had the attitude of 'let's screw
- the conference for as much money for as little work as possible.'
- And it works, short term. It just makes SIGGRAPH want to avoid Union
- towns in the future.
-
- Just a few:
-
- Student volunteers were not allowed to carry cardboard signs to the
- various locations. "That's a Union Job". Of course, the signs were
- then just stuffed into the holders haphazardly. For example, there
- were three "Radiosity" signs in the same holder. I had to redo all
- the signs at the papers and panels.
-
- Student volunteers were not allowed to change tapes or press 'rewind'
- at the Living room screening room. "That's a Union Job."
-
- The AV people had to routinely hand out cash to get the union
- guys to actually start work. Do you wonder how the foreman could
- afford the Ferarri(no joke) he drove up in?
-
- There was a robot arm in the art show. Before it could be set up,
- the union guys had to decide who had jurisdiction to move it. Teamsters
- move general stuff. The Electricians handle computers, and this
- had lots of microprocessors. Another Union was in charge of setting
- up the Art Show. Elapsed time to discuss this: 6 hours.
-
- and my favorite:
-
- The normal speakers in the Arie Crown theatre had to be removed
- from their perch near the ceiling because they interfered with our
- projection. The unions said that would take 10 guys 8 hours. After
- *long* negotiations, they accepted 4(or was it 8) guys on an 8 hour
- call. What happened was: two guys rolled carts out from a closet and
- placed them underneath the speakers. Another guy walked over to
- a wall panel and threw a switch. The speakers came down onto the
- carts. Elapsed time: 10 minutes. Of course, now the guys had 7
- hours and 50 minutes to spend doing other things, at *your expense*.
