- I think that sci.astro.fits should be mentioned first. The
- basics and information posting appears monthly, with a one-month
- expiration period, to always be present on a system that honors
- monthly expiration periods. It may evolve into a formal FAQ posted to
- news.answers, but the international FITS leadership has to decide on
- that action. There is a FITS anonymous directory on
- nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov that contains FITS references and information,
- some FITS software and where to find other software, but it does not
- duplicate the basics and information posting. The information from
- sci.astro.fits most relevant to this group (comp.graphics) is the
- following:
-
- FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) is a data format
- designed to allow convenient exchange of astronomical data between
- installations whose standard internal formats and hardware differ.
- FITS is not principally a graphics format designed for the transfer of
- pictures with standard support for many platforms included as part of
- the package for decoding the image. Separate software must be
- developed or obtained for converting the data from the FITS file into
- a form that can be readily displayed.
