- My system administrators are considering recompiling Emacs 18.58 to
- enable the displaying of 8-bit input. They have, however, raised
- several concerns which I take the opportunity to post in this forum.
-
- The patch being considered is the following:
-
- The most comprehensive patches for 8-bit output are by Howard Gayle
- (originally for Emacs 18.55. These patches allow displaying any arbitrary
- string for a given 8-bit character (except TAB and C-j). Also supported
- is defining the sorting order and the uppercase and lowercase
- translations. It is reported that the 8-bit character support in Emacs 19
- is largely based on these patches. Thomas Bellman
- <Bellman@lysator.liu.se> has updated these patches for Emacs 18.57.
-
- The question is:
-
- > It's okay with me to recompile emacs with that diff. However, of the
- > two diffs that you mentioned, the one that looked better (namely
- > Howard Gayle's) doesn't seem to have been updated for Emacs 18.58. It

-
- Our most important concern is highlighted in caps. Does anyone out
- there have answers for us? Also, how would my sysadmin's final
- question be answered for the other patches available for displaying
- 8-bit input, namely the ones stated in FAQ 149:
-
