  36. Established in 1980 as a nonprofit consortium, MCNC continues its pivotal
  37. support role in technology education and research for attracting and
  38. generating technology-based industry for North Carolina. MCNC matches the

  49.                NORTH CAROLINA SUPERCOMPUTING CENTER
  50.  
  51. The North Carolina Supercomputing Center (NCSC) is a state-supported 
  52. Supercomputing Center and Research Institute located in the Research Triangle 
  53. Park, North Carolina.  The NCSC program is national and international in scope 
  54. as well as impact.  NCSC promotes educational and research activities in 
  55. high-performance computing and its applications in science, engineering and 
  56. other disciplines.  The Center works in close collaboration with universities 
  57. and industry to enhance the economic development of North Carolina and to 
  58. support the national high-performance computing initiative.

  60. NCSC's computational environment includes a Cray Y-MP, running UNICOS,
  61. which began operating in September 1989.  The Center is accessible at high 
  62. band width (T1/T3) by means of North Carolina's existing data communications 
  63. network and is connected to the appropriate national networks.

  66.                     MANAGER, EDUCATION (#444)
  67.  
  68. This employee will manage, develop, and coordinate education programs for all
  69. aspects of NCSC activities. This includes programs for teachers and students
  70. from kindergarden through post-doc for all educational institutions in the
  71. state including universities, community colleges and local K-12 school
  72. districts.  Will advise NCSC management on education policies and plans, and
  73. contributes to organizational planning and decision-making.  Represents the
  74. Center in statewide and national computational science initiatives and 
  75. positions the Center as a leader in education.  Prepares short and long-range
  76. plans for the Education Group.  Develops programs that enhance computational
  77. science statewide and will also meet the needs of the scientific community and
  78. academia, including writing and coordination proposals to obtain Federal,
  79. State or private funding in support of these projects.  Interacts on a regular
  80. basis with members of other North Carolina education groups. Represents NCSC
  81. at national meetings and conferences as appropriate.  Responsible for hiring
  82. new staff and students as authorized.  Budgetary responsibility for the 
  83. Education Group including budget planning and expenditure approval.

  85. Requires a Ph.D. with graduate study in either computer science, engineering,
  86. mathematics or equivalent.  Previous management experience in an educational
  87. or high tech environment is required.  A proven track record in successful
  88. submission of funding proposals and a background in Computational Science is 
  89. also a plus.
