- Just a warning to the people interested in the Gateway Telepath modem. The
- advertising states that you will get Crosstalk for Windows, WinFax Pro, and
- Qmodem. And you will.
-
- However, you will get Qmodem version 4.5, the test drive version which is
- available on many bulletin boards. If you want the commercial version 5.0,
- you must pay an extra $35, which is sent directly to Mustang Software. That
- really irks me.
-
- It might be a gray area, since they don't advertise which version is sent.
- But, the software doesn't add significant value to the system, which is the
- implication of the advertising. My decision to wait for this modem (which
- was about four months late) was partially based on the bundled software.
-
- When I called Gateway, they essentially said, "Too bad. That's the version
- it comes with. If you don't like it, send the modem back." The additional
- cost isn't a hardship, but it sure changes my opinion of Gateway. In the
- past, they've never done anything sleazy like that to me. In the future,
- they probably won't have a chance.
-
- By the way, the modem works great. My complaint is with their ambiguous
- or even misleading advertising.
